¬ęsticky nights¬Ľ

marisa purcell

All Painting is about something, be is psychological, philosophical or subconscious. In the paintings of Marisa Purcell their formal qualities engage and challenge the viewers' perceptions about the act of seeing itself. There is a tendency to want to desribe or categorise these paintings, however, these works have emerged in an improvisational way, entirely at the mercy to the moment(s) of which they were executed.

The current paintings draw from the inner world of the artist - embracing the process of painting itself as a means to extract the subject. Process, temperament and images all work in unison through an instinctive knowledge and control of the medium.

Sticky Nights is a playful celebration of chance, and time passing. Recurring references to elliptical form are suggestive of the internal landscape along with the wonder associated with light.

Marisa Purcell was born in Australia in 1971 and has been living in Switzerland for the past year. Since her first show in 1993, she has maintained a dedicated exhibition schedule. Marisa Purcell recently held a successful exhibition at Table Gallery, Basel during June/July 2004. Her most recent grant is a residency at the Cite Internationale de Paris for late 2004.
